OUR STORY

THE ADVENTURE SO FAR

SideQuest Theater grew from our flagship show, Roll Play: An Improvised Adventure. Founded by director Josh Holober-Ward in 2017, Roll Play started as a small group of improviser friends paying loving comedic tribute to the fantastical world of tabletop RPGs (such as Dungeons & Dragons). Over the course of several years, the show and its community of fans grew rapidly, eventually blossoming into an ensemble of 17 all-star improvisers performing 20+ shows per year.

In June of 2023, after the historic Adrienne Mainstage Theater became newly available, Josh realized that Roll Play had just the right creative team & enthusiastic community to embark on something seriously special. A place where we could offer the type of improvisation & role-playing classes we’d been dreaming of, and create exciting new shows and ensembles that bring improvised theater to new heights.

And so, after months of hard work by our founders— Josh Holober-Ward, Cara Hammer, Kelsey Hébert, and Dominick Arp— in April of 2024, SideQuest Theater opens its doors!

ABOUT US

MEET THE PARTY

Josh Holober-Ward

Level 16 College of Creation Bard
Background: Entertainer

Josh Holober-Ward is an improvised theatre producer, director, instructor, and performer. In 2017, Josh founded Roll Play: An Improvised Adventure, which has grown into one of the most successful improv shows in Philly. In the last decade he has taught improv professionally at institutions such as CSz Philadelphia’s School of Improv, and The Unscripted Project– a local non-profit which brings improv classes to Philly’s public schools. He is also a proud company member of ComedySportz, Philly’s longest-running comedy show. Josh is a lifelong advocate of the theatre arts, and believes in the transformative power of creative expression, laughter, and storytelling. He is passionate about bringing the joys & benefits of improv to as wide a community as possible, and helping others on their journey.

Cara Hammer

Level 16 Battle Master Fighter
Background: Outlander

Cara Hammer has had a passion for good stories and relatable characters since childhood. She’ll never forget the rush of spotting that mysterious FINAL FANTASY III box at the bottom of a clearance bin, climbing and digging in a frenzy to reach it while Ma waited her turn at the deli. That same Ma ensured every new Redwall novel found its way into Cara’s hands, and held Friday night Star Trek sacrosanct. Cara’s love of fantastical worlds has only deepened with time. She’s proud to play an integral role in building SideQuest Theater: A place where folks can come together and celebrate a good story.

Cara is also the co-producer and Master of Props for Think Fast!, co-producer of Is That Right?!, founder of Two-Faced Improv Company, and a proud member of relationship-forward improv ensemble Don’t I Know You?

Kelsey Hébert

Level 16 Fey Wanderer Ranger
Background: Hermit
Animal Companion: Beverly (Cat)

Kelsey Hébert (she/her) is a theater artist from Abita Springs, Louisiana. She joined the Philly community after graduating with a BFA in performance from the University of Southern Mississippi. Kelsey has worked with multiple theaters in the region including the Arden Theatre Company, Act II Playhouse, and Hedgerow Theatre; she currently performs with ComedySportz, Roll Play: An Improvised Adventure, and KDM. With a foot in both scripted theater and improv, Kelsey is no stranger to collaborative storytelling, and has seen first-hand the power it holds. She hopes that SideQuest Theater will be a hub for stories and storytellers, where creatives, audiences, and adventurers converge to revel in the joy a great story can bring.

Dominick Arp

Level 16 Illusion Wizard
Background: Sage

Dominick “Dom” Arp (he/him) has been an improviser in the Philly community for over 10 years. He is currently performing with Roll Play, Show and Tell Live, and KDM. He is also the producer and director of 3-2-1 and Be Kind: A Rewind Show. He has experience as an improv teacher at a number of institutions including Drexel University, the Franklin Institute, and the Philly Improv Theater. Currently he is also the president of the Philadelphia Improv Social Club. Having additionally trained in public speaking, theater, & business administration, he is passionate about the power of combining theory, theatrics, and policy in order to grow the Philly improv community.

Renovating the Adrienne Mainstage

Reno 1

When we became the new stewards of the Adrienne Mainstage, it was clear this beautiful space needed a lot of love. The chairs were worn out, dirty, and broken. Every wall, pillar, and ceiling was full of 20 years worth of holes, tears, staples, and screws. From January to April, our core renovation team invested over a combined 1000+ hours of work to make this theater what it is now.

Cara Hammer – Project Management & Reupholstery
Alex Tallarico – Risers & Seating Installation
Kelsey Hébert – Reupholstery & Painting
Josh Holober-Ward – Patching & Painting
Dominick Arp – Cleaning & Storage

We'd also like to thank our incredible volunteers who jumped in to help tear up carpet, remove staples, sand, clean, and countless other tasks:
